| this past sat was the race at ninegret, my dad and i got there for the cat 5 race and i started the race being very nochalant, not really racing just moving around in a paceline. with like 10 laps to go i got to the front of the paceline to take my pull and i started to raise the pace to kind of break away with the pack chasing me to waste there energy chaising me down. well as i started to raise the pace i looked back over my shoulder to see no one chasing and my lead growing rapidly. than after about another half a lap two guys came up to join me in break away pack. we raced away from the peleton to about a 40 sec lead taking 30 sec pulls in the front. on the last lap comming into the third from last corner the two other guys broke to the left and the right and started to sprint away to try to drop me, but i just sprinted between them and they gave me and each other puzzled looks. than coming into the last corner (still three across) they tried it again. i sprinted right with them dropping my chain to the 44,12 (my tallest gear) and just put the hammer down, and held the lead till the last 150 feet to the finish then the other guy used the sling shot to just beat me. as i think back about it now i should have waited a little longer to sprint and should have built up from the 13 or 14 in my rear cog to conserve energy. after that i got a little rest in till the juniors race. our coach, bill told us to a team time trial during the race till the last lap and then it was any ones game. to start the race the race official had us do a two lap nutral paceline to lower the # of laps to 15. we did the free laps and being really anixious to race i brought the pace right up to drop the slowbies but the team didnt react. i slowed up for the pack to get back into the paceline and after about 1/2 the race enan's mom put up some money for a preim and as miss kirk said it- it set up a breakaway group. me even ben and a kid named matt (who looked no more than 13) went for the prime, ben and evan got it and we formed the breakaway. we were realy trying to drop the other kid putting him into the wind every time, and amazingly he pushed his tallest gear into it every time! on the last lap i was fighting just to stay on the group, and out of the last lap ben led out the sprint with matt grabbing onto his wheel. literally seconds later evan shot up to get 4th. ben had led matt up to the line when he made his move with just enof time for ben to counter attack to get the win. all in all it was a great event held on a very great course. thanks to the promoters and mvc! look for my report on the housatonic hills championship race next sun. |
